SARS-CoV-2 has undergone many changes and has undergone mutations. Currently, WHO and researchers around the world are tracking three variants of the virus mutation. The first is B.1.1.7 which was first identified in Great Britain. The second is B.1.351 which was first identified in South Africa. And the third is P.1, the first, circulating in Brazil, but identified among travelers arriving in Japan.

What does the SARS-CoV-2 virus mutation mean in terms of transmission, severity and potential impact on diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines. So far, the information is that there is an increase in the transmission of virus variants B.1.1.7 and B.1.351. And this resulted from a mutation that allowed this viral variant to bind to cells, human cells, more easily. Researchers haven't seen an increase in transmission with P.1, but they're currently being investigated. In terms of severity, there are several studies from the UK which show that B.1.1.7 has increased severity.
